Polyacrylamide (PAM) in Livestock Farming: Applications and Functions

Polyacrylamide (PAM), a high-molecular-weight polymer, is widely used in livestock farming due to its flocculation, thickening, and adhesion properties. Its applications primarily focus on ‌wastewater treatment, manure management, and environmental improvement‌. Below are the key use cases and mechanisms:

1. Livestock Wastewater Treatment

Livestock farms (e.g., piggeries, poultry farms) generate large volumes of wastewater containing feces, feed residues, suspended solids, pathogens, and organic pollutants (COD/BOD), which pose environmental risks if untreated.

As a ‌flocculant‌, PAM neutralizes charges and bridges suspended particles (e.g., feces, colloids) to form larger flocs, accelerating sedimentation. PAM is often combined with inorganic coagulants (e.g., PAC) to enhance efficiency and reduce treatment costs.

After treatment, turbidity, COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), and BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) of water are significantly reduced. Clarified water could be reused (e.g., cleaning facilities) or safe discharged.

2. Manure Dehydration and Resource Recovery

Livestock manure has high moisture content, making it difficult to store, transport, or utilize directly. Untreated manure also emits odors and harbors pathogens.

Cationic PAM(CPAM) could be added to manure before mechanical dehydration (via centrifuges, belt filters, or screw presses). CPAM promotes particle aggregation, improving dehydration efficiency and reducing moisture content from >80% to <60%.

After treatment, manure volume could be reduced for easier transport and storage. Dehydrated manure can be converted into organic fertilizer, reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers.

3. Supplementary Applications

1)Soil Amendment‌: PAM residues in treated manure enhance soil structure and water/nutrient retention.

2)Aquaculture‌: Low-dose PAM clarifies pond water but requires strict dosage control to avoid aquatic toxicity.

3)Dust Suppression‌: PAM solutions sprayed on feed or bedding materials reduce airborne dust.

Hengfeng has polyacrylamide for the treatment of livestock wastewater. Hengfeng provide service including inquiry, lab test and pilot test. We provide not only products but also service. We will choose the suitable polyacrylamide according to the type of wastewater and the field equipment to achieve the best using effect and experience.
